YNU Singapore Alumni Association (SG Tokiwakai) Activity Report

On Monday, April 8, 2025, the YNU Singapore Alumni Association (SG Tokiwakai) held a gathering at TUKUNE ICHIGO in Singapore. As it was the beginning of the new fiscal year, the number of participants was slightly lower than usual, with nine alumni attending. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was as lively and cheerful as always.
At the beginning of the event, a newly published English-language book titled The Land of the Rising Sun and the Lion City: The Story of Japan and Singapore, released on April 2, 2025, was introduced. Co-edited by Ambassador Tommy Koh of Singapore and Ambassador Hiroshi Ishikawa of Japan, the book reflects on the history of friendship between the two countries and features contributions from various individuals involved in bilateral relations.
One of the contributors, Mr. Tan Jong Lek(Pictured below), who studied at the Faculty of Engineering at our university as a Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbusho) scholarship student in 1977, passionately spoke about the book. He highlighted the spirit of "heart-to-heart exchange" shared by international students from Japan, Singapore, and other ASEAN countries, and how this ideal has been actively practiced for over 40 years.
The event concluded with our traditional “Miharukasu Challenge,” where all participants sang the university song together. For some, it was their first time singing it since joining the alumni association in Singapore. Fortunately, the organizer had shared a “Hatsune Miku version” YouTube link in advance, and the challenge was a great success, bringing the gathering to a cheerful close.
The YNU Singapore Alumni Association (SG Tokiwakai) organizes several gatherings each year, mainly for alumni residing in Singapore.
Our next event is scheduled for June or July.
We look forward to seeing many of you there!
