On Friday, October 11, 2024, as part of the “Intercultural Experience Program” supported by the Yokohama National University Alumni Association, an English Rakugo performer, Mr. Kimochi, was invited to perform "English RAKUGO" at the Information Lounge on the first floor of the Yokohama National University Central Library.

The event was held during lunch time and many international and Japanese students, faculty and staff attended, creating a lively atmosphere at the venue.

First, he explained the basics of rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of storytelling, including the important role of the audience's imagination. Participants were able to enjoy the facial expressions and emotions of the performer through his basic English and gestures, even though some of them may not be fluent in English. The fun and humor of rakugo was conveyed to the participants, transcending language barriers, creating smiles throughout the hall.

During the experience with demonstrations, the students were taught that they could easily understand the differences between the characters by the direction of their faces and eyes, and that they could make their performances more interesting by drastically changing the tone of their voices. The international students' performance, which was hard to believe that it was their first time, got the audience very excited. The students were also able to learn about Japanese traditional performing arts and deepen connection among the participants through the performance.

It was a valuable experience for international and Japanese students, faculty and staff to enjoy together, and an unforgettable memory for all the participants.
